Cream shortening and sugar and add the egg, molasses and water. Beat well. Sift together the dry ingredients separately and then blend into the creamed mixture. Chill 2 hours or over night. Roll out thinly on lightly floured surface or pastry board and cut in desired shapes with cookie cutters. Sprinkle with plain or colored sugar as an option. Bake on seasoned or sprayed cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes.
